夏甲绝望地放声大哭。以实玛利的名字意为“上帝听到了”（参见创世记 16:11），这很贴切。上帝听到了男孩的哭声。不仅夏甲为儿子的生命而哭泣，以实玛利也在他被遗弃的灌木丛下独自哭泣。听到以实玛利的哭声，上帝立即做出了回应。
上帝的天使从天上呼唤夏甲，一个声音从高处传来。它说，夏甲，你怎么了？不要害怕，因为上帝已经听到了孩子的声音。上帝听到了他们的烦恼，并做出了回应。他的帮助来自下面的经文。
听到天堂的声音，夏甲无疑感到安心。这不是主的天使第一次来拯救夏甲（创世记 16:7）。上帝的恩典延伸到夏甲和以实玛利。他们没有得到他们想要的东西，但他们仍然得到了一份大礼。
