上帝的天使告诉夏甲“起来”。这不是她和她儿子的末日。她被命令把孩子以实玛利抱起来，拉着他的手。上帝对以实玛利有计划，与他对亚伯拉罕和以撒的计划类似，他将使以实玛利的后代成为一个伟大的国家。以实玛利将成为一个伟大国家的创始人的宣言再次被重复（创世记 21:13，16:10-12）。作为每个人和每件事的创造者，上帝爱并关心全人类，而不仅仅是以色列。
上帝打开了夏甲的眼睛，她看到了一口水井。上帝不知怎么地干预了夏甲，让她找到了一口水井。也许这口水井一直都在那里，只是她自己太累了，儿子可能也死了，所以没看到。也许上帝把水井放在那里是为了她。发现这口水井让以实玛利和夏甲免于渴死。半沙漠国家的水井是无价之宝。以实玛利得到了上帝的两项祝福，一个命运和一口水。
然后我们得知上帝与这孩子同在，他长大成人。上帝在以实玛利长大成人的整个过程中保护着他。以实玛利继续生活在荒野中，特别是帕兰荒野。帕兰是西奈半岛东部的主要沙漠。它向南延伸到红海，向北延伸到加低斯甚至贝尔谢巴。以实玛利长大后成为一名弓箭手。射箭是在这种环境中生存的必要技能，无论是狩猎还是战斗。以实玛利的后代被称为神射手（以赛亚书 21:17；创世记 25:13）。
时候到了，夏甲从埃及地为儿子娶了一个妻子。夏甲也是土生土长的埃及人（创世记 16:1）。当时父亲为儿子娶妻是风俗，但因为亚伯拉罕把他们打发走了，夏甲不得不承担起这个责任。以实玛利是被抛弃的儿子，他是一个女奴的儿子，嫁给了一个埃及人。但他得到了上帝的照顾。
