雅各最初离家的动机，只是为了“暂时”躲避哥哥的愤怒。当他最终回到家时，已经过去了大约20年（创世记31:38）。他不仅年事已高，而且更加成熟，拥有了完整的家业。基督的预兆是不可否认的。耶稣在世上的日子，在造就了十二门徒之后，回到了天父那里。这些门徒后来将救恩的福音传遍万国，拓展祂世世代代的国度（约翰福音17:11-12，马太福音28:19-20）。雅各在返回故乡的途中，对耶和华说：
你向仆人所施的一切慈爱和诚实，我都不配得。我先前只拿着我的杖过这约旦河，如今我却成了两队。
