本章开头介绍了亚当的世代（家谱）。家谱的主要目的是记录应许的后裔（基督）的直系后代（创世记 3：15）。第 1 节提醒我们，人是按照上帝的形象造的（创世记 1：27）。人类按照上帝的形象造出的主要方式之一是我们可以做出道德选择。不幸的是，到目前为止，我们已经看到许多糟糕的道德选择。但情况会变得更糟。
家谱始于亚当的儿子塞特。亚当 130 岁时，塞特出生，其形象与亚当相似（上帝按照自己的形象造人）。亚当还有其他儿子和女儿。显然，这个时代的环境和人体有很大的不同。大约三千年前写的诗篇 90:10 说，预期寿命是七十或八十岁，与我们今天的经历相似。但在诺亚洪水之前的历史时期，情况截然不同。
在《创世记》第 5 章中，我们八次看到“然后他死了”这句话。由于亚当的罪，死亡现在成为人类的一部分，正如《新约圣经》罗马书所解释的那样： “这就如罪是从一人入了世界，死又是从罪来的，于是死就临到众人” （罗马书 5:12）。最早有记录的死亡是谋杀，但最终人们开始因年老而死亡。
亚伯被弟弟杀害后，塞特出生。塞特105岁时生了一个儿子，给他取名为以诺，名字的意思是“人类”。
