第五至第八节是洪水故事的引言。上帝看到人类在地上罪恶滔天。这不仅仅是人类本性的腐败，更是公开、大胆的犯罪和对上帝的叛逆。
在创世记第一章中，上帝为亚当和夏娃准备了地球。由于人类变得腐败，没有按照上帝的旨意行事，上帝用洪水收回了地球。上帝后悔创造了人类。因为亚当和夏娃犯了罪，他们的生活充满了痛苦。但人类的罪给上帝带来了痛苦。他心里很伤心，字面意思是“他的心很痛”。我们可以说，人类可怕的罪恶深深地冒犯了他，“它伤透了上帝的心”。人类的创造不是上帝的错误；是人类自己创造的才让上帝感到悔恨。
人类和野兽都将被毁灭。在创世记 6:7 中，有趣的是，“抹去”一词的意思是洗去，类似于擦掉老师的黑板。在这里，上帝要用一场全球性的洪水洗去人类。在上帝的眼中，整个地球（人类、动物和鸟类）都被人类的邪恶所污染。除了诺亚，没有人呼求主的名。诺亚在主的眼中蒙恩。
