诺亚是个义人，也就是说他是正直的人，精神上正直。他为人正直，正直无私。就像以诺一样，诺亚与上帝同行，也就是说他顺从上帝，忠于上帝。诺亚从洪水中被拯救出来，以诺从肉体死亡中被拯救出来。上帝拯救那些与他同行的人。诺亚还生了三个儿子，闪、含和雅弗。我们不知道为什么诺亚只有三个孩子，而且这些孩子都在五百到六百岁之间。但在人类历史的这个时代，生育似乎间隔得更远了。
上帝看着地球，看哪，它已经败坏了，因为凡有血气的人在地上都败坏了行为。世上的恶人公然犯罪，毫无羞耻，毫无敬畏上帝之心。全人类都被毁坏了。人们做自己认为正确的事情，但行为总会有后果。人类变得如此腐败的后果是上帝宣布他将从地球上消灭人类和野兽。洪水是上帝的审判。上帝决定毁灭人类和地球。然后上帝对诺亚说：“凡有血气的人的结局已经来到我面前；因为地上因他们的强暴而满了全地。看哪，我要把他们和全地一并毁灭。”由于地球上的腐败和暴力，以及其程度，上帝将审判恶人和地球。
耶稣后来会说，总结上帝律法的两条大诫命，即全心全意爱上帝和爱邻如己，都被人类破坏了。尽管律法尚未颁布，但上帝对人类的设计反映了这两条诫命。上帝希望人类与他和彼此和谐地统治和统治地球（创世记 1:28；诗篇 8）。但现在却发生了相反的事情。上帝很伤心。他的设计被扭曲了。但他将开辟一条新的道路，从毁灭开始。反抗上帝会导致分裂，最终导致暴力。但上帝将审判暴力，通过那些寻求并追随他道路的人来审判。
