上帝考验亚伯拉罕，要求他献上他唯一的儿子以撒。亚伯拉罕因着信，被考验的时候就献上以撒，这就是那领受应许的，将他唯一的儿子献上（第 17 节） 。上帝应许亚伯拉罕，他的后裔将因他的儿子以撒而多如星辰。上帝曾对亚伯拉罕说过：“从以撒生的才要称为你的后裔。” （第 18 节）
亚伯拉罕相信上帝会履行他的诺言，他认为上帝能够使人从死里复活。亚伯拉罕顺从地按照上帝的指示牺牲了以撒，相信上帝会让以撒复活。上帝阻止了顺从的亚伯拉罕牺牲以撒，但在某种程度上，亚伯拉罕将他从死里复活作为一种预表（第 19 节），因为他决定服从上帝。亚伯拉罕对上帝考验的服从为他带来了上帝的祝福（创世记 22）。
以撒也凭着信心超越了死亡。在《创世记》第 27 章中，他凭着信心祝福他的儿子雅各和以扫，甚至祝福那些在他死后很久才会发生的事（第 20 节） 。雅各相信，即使他已经离世，上帝仍会在他儿子的生活中发挥作用，祝福他们。
以撒的儿子雅各也得到了祝福，他也有超越死亡的信心。与以撒一样，雅各在临终时祝福约瑟的两个儿子，相信上帝将来会做工。凭着信心，雅各临终时祝福约瑟的每个儿子，并拄着拐杖敬拜上帝（第 21 节） 。雅各在临终时也敬拜上帝。（见创世记 48:15-16）雅各一直保持忠诚，直到完成他的工作。
最后，约瑟临死时，提到了神对亚伯拉罕的应许。他对兄弟们说：“我快要死了，神必定看顾你们，领你们从这地上去，到他起誓应许亚伯拉罕、以撒、雅各之地” （创世记 50:24）。约瑟在埃及住了很久，但他相信有一天神会实现他的应许。他请求将他的尸体带去神应许之地：约瑟因着信，临死的时候提到以色列人要出埃及的事，并为自己的骸骨吩咐了一切（第 22 节） 。
这些例子表明，只要坚信我们的家园不在这里，而是在天堂与上帝同在，就能在面对死亡时保持非凡的信心。那些忠于自己生命的人将他们在天堂的时光视为朝圣之旅，最终目的地是与上帝共度永生。他们还把上帝对他们后代的承诺视为对他们的极大祝福。
