亚伯拉罕被视为犹太教之父，是保罗书信作者的读者眼中的重要人物。保罗书信作者也以他为凭信心行事的榜样。在《创世记》第 12 章中，上帝告诉亚伯拉罕离开家乡，去往上帝要指示他的土地：亚伯拉罕因着信，蒙召的时候就遵命出去，往将来要得为业的地方去。出去的时候，还不知往哪里去（第 8 节） 。
上帝应许使他成为一个伟大的国家并赐福给他。亚伯拉罕需要很大的信心才能离开家乡跟随上帝，然后才知道自己要去哪里。然而，他服从了上帝的安排，前往一个他最终会得到遗产的地方。
他到了迦南，神告诉他要把这片土地赐给他的后代：他因着信，就在所应许之地作客，好像在异地居住帐棚，与那蒙一个应许的以撒、雅各一同居住（第 9 节） 。他在这片土地上过着寄居的生活，住在一个简陋、简陋的房子里，这个房子很快就没用了，他和他的儿子以撒、孙子雅各一起住在帐棚里，他们也是神对亚伯拉罕的应许的继承人。
亚伯拉罕坚信上帝会建造另一座更伟大的城市，基督将统治的天上之城。虽然亚伯拉罕只住在帐篷里，但他在寻找一座有根基的城市，这座城的建筑师和建造者是上帝（第 10 节） 。这种信念使他在困难的情况下保持忠诚。

神实现了他对亚伯拉罕和莎拉的承诺-他们有了一个儿子，因此从一个男人生出了...子孙，如同天上的星那样众多，海边的沙那样无数（第 12 节） 。
