约拿不顺服耶和华前往尼尼微的命令，乘船去往他施，与尼尼微相反的方向。耶和华差派大风到海上，阻挠约拿的计划。当水手们掣签以决定负有责任的一方时，签落在约拿身上。他要求他们把自己抛入海中，好使大海平静下来。水手们没有把约拿抛到船外，而是竭尽全力要返回陆地，但他们却不能，因为海变得更加翻腾。最终，他们把约拿抛出船外，海就停止了狂浪。
先知约拿在海中经历了极大的痛苦，即将溺水身亡。他感觉自己身在水牢，因为他不能挽救自己的性命。但当他呼求耶和华时，就找到了解脱和拯救。耶和华安排一条大鱼吞了约拿，使他免于溺水。约拿在鱼腹中三天三夜。随后，耶和华吩咐鱼把约拿放置在旱地上。
这里，动词吩咐在希伯来文中是"amar"，意思是说话，或对某人说话，表示双方之间的沟通。在这种情况下，一方说话，期待另外一方听到、理解和回复。在约拿书这里，耶和华向这条鱼说话好似它是一个人。他吩咐鱼把约拿送到岸上，安全地把他放置在那里。鱼顺服耶和华的声音：它就把约拿吐在旱地上。
动词吐的意思是喷吐。吐经常是一种厌恶的表现，正如耶和华承诺会拒绝以色列人，如果他们用自己的罪玷污那地的话（利未记 18:28；20:22）。在此，这个词的使用可能暗示着耶和华使鱼因约拿产生了厌恶。结果，鱼就把他喷吐出来。
