神开始向摩西宣告，耶和华的节期乃是这些。这句话清楚表明，这些节期起源于神，不能被声称为是任何国家所指定的，包括以色列。它们是由耶和华所指定的。
除了安息日，耶和华的节期通常可以分为两个部分：

重要的是不要混淆影儿和投射它的物体，影儿作为真实事物的代表是有用的。
神告诉摩西，向以色列人宣告为圣会的节期是祂的责任。会的希伯来文单词是"miqra"，可以指"预演"。神晓谕祂的节期是为未来一个弥赛亚事件的神圣的预演。耶稣曾经、也将会在每一个这样的节期上做重要的事情。他在逾越节死去，在初熟节从死人中复活，在七七节（也叫五旬节）差遣圣灵将律法写在信徒的心上并与信徒同在。许多人相信，在他第二次降临时他会应验吹角节、赎罪日和住棚节。
这些会是神圣的。神圣指的是为一个特别的目的而被分别出来。这些特别的日期是为了被遵守，而不是被忽略，这可能就是本章以向以色列人宣告这些命令中的一条为开始的原因。
