耶稣家谱的对应记载是在路加福音 3:23-38 和约翰福音 1:1-18.
在犹太文化中，家谱非常重要。它们提供了个人的身份，并将每一位成员植入于他在以色列民族历史中的独特位置，而且家谱在建立王室血统上也很实用。马太福音中耶稣的家谱对这三方面都有所展示。它证实了耶稣是基督，弥赛亚的身份；建立了他大卫王的王室血统；且将他的犹太传承根植于亚伯拉罕。
