这一家谱记录在福音书中没有明显的对应记载。
仔细观察马太从亚伯拉罕到弥赛亚基督的历代分段，我们可以发现，它们并非是按时间平均分配的。比如，亚伯拉罕到大卫之间的十四代大约 1000 年，而从大卫作王到迁至巴比伦的十四代大约是 800 年。从迁至巴比伦的时候到基督的十四代大约 600 年。
马太的目的显然不是要提及耶稣家谱中每一个人的名字，也不是要将其划分为相同的时间段。他的家谱记载是按着犹太历史中关键事件的重要性，以及确立耶稣身份的象征性含义来组织的。耶稣是亚伯拉罕的子孙，是要祝福万国的。耶稣是大卫的后代，是永不终止之国度的合法君王。耶稣是弥赛亚基督，来拯救、复兴和救赎他生活在被罪所掳中的百姓。自从迁至巴比伦以来，以色列民族就没有了统治的君王。现在弥赛亚基督已经来了，为要复兴这国度，但其方式并非人们所期待的。
为什么有三个十四代呢？
马太的划分有许多西方思想中几乎无法看到的意义。犹太文学并没有独特的符号来代表数字，比如我们文化中所使用的罗马数字或阿拉伯数字。相反，他们将具体的数值分配给他们字母表中的不同字母。这种做法叫做 "希伯来文字母代码"，是古犹太文化中的常见做法。
在马太福音基督家谱中的中心人物是大卫王。大卫的名字在希伯来文中由三个字母组成："Dalet、Waw、Dalet"，这三个字母加起来的数值是十四 (四 + 六 + 四)。马太将其划分为三个十四代，强调了耶稣在明确的犹太背景下的大卫王血统。马太在向他的犹太听众强调，耶稣是大卫的后嗣，是犹太人合法的君王。
