这一事件在福音书中没有明显的对应记载。
马太对耶稣基督出生的记载很大程度上是从约瑟的角度而论 (路加的出生记载是从马利亚的角度出发)。当马利亚已经许配了约瑟，或者与约瑟订婚以后，发现她怀了孕。马利亚在还没有被迎娶，也就是还没有性关系前，就怀孕了。
马利亚就从圣灵怀了孕。当然约瑟只知道他还没有迎娶马利亚，但他不知道马利亚就从圣灵怀了孕。他会很自然地推测她与另一个男人发生关系；他可能很受伤。在犹太律法下，他有权利羞辱她，或者更糟。但他是个义人，想要暗暗地把她休了，好保护马利亚。可能，暗暗地把她休了包括解除婚约。既或在痛苦中，他仍然是一个义人。他并不想因明显的 "背叛" 来惩罚马利亚。
