这一比喻在其它福音记载中并没有对应记载。
教导完七个比喻和向门徒解释了部分比喻之后，耶稣问他们说，这一切的话你们都明白了吗？他是在问，他们是否理解这些比喻的含义，以及这些关乎天国比喻所启示有关他们生命和选择的本质。门徒确定他们明白这一切的话。
因为他们明白，耶稣就告诉门徒说，凡文士受教作天国的门徒，就像一个家主从他库里拿出新旧的东西来。要明白这句谜一般的话，我们必须思考它的术语。
文士是明白书写文字的含义和信息的人，特别是经文。他们对经文以及其含义和信息有深刻而广泛的理解。
门徒是学习者、跟随者，或学生。
家主是家中最具权威的人。他负责家里的一切，而且家里的一切最终都属于家主。
库里的东西是属于家主的，是家主的财宝。
天国是耶稣的国度；我们若明白这个恩赐，并忠心地接受它，就有机会参与其中。
耶稣说，凡/每一个成为竭力追求天国之门徒的文士 (凡明白圣经的人)，就像一个对自己的东西有权柄的家主。文士的东西是他对圣经的知识和理解。寻求国度的文士要从他经文知识的财富中拿出新旧的东西来。换言之，他的理解将完美地肯定他和其他人理解已久的永恒真理，而且将以国度为导向的见解揭示对圣经的新理解，这些理解一直都在，但只能透过天国的亮光才能被看到。这些真理一直都在，但它们在很大程度上是看不见的，或者是不被那些不明白天国之人所欣赏的。
那寻求天国的文士需要 "有眼看" 和 "有耳听" 圣经所要充分揭示和讲说的内容。
