这一事件的对应福音记载是在马可福音 6:1-6。
紧随他对耶稣比喻和解释的第一手记载之后，马太继续他的叙述。
耶稣向门徒和众人说完了这些比喻，就离开加利利海周围的地区那里，来到自己的家乡拿撒勒。它位于加利利以西的数英里之外。一回到家，他就开始在会堂里教训拿撒勒人。他家乡的人都希奇。
他们彼此互问说这怎么可能？这人从哪里有这等智慧和异能呢？这不是木匠的儿子吗？他母亲不是叫马利亚吗？他弟兄们不是叫雅各、约西、西门、犹大吗？他妹妹们不是都在我们这里吗？这人从哪里有这一切的事呢？
他们认识耶稣父亲母亲弟兄妹妹们的事实表明，他们对他非常熟悉。他们知道他父亲的职业，看着耶稣长大。然而，他们却依然惊奇他的教训和神迹，并不认为他是他们的弥赛亚。他们问，作为他们当中的一员，这人从哪里有这等智慧和异能呢？
难过的是，他们的希奇变成了厌弃。他们不能明白的，他们就拒绝相信。拿撒勒人就厌弃耶稣。
耶稣回应说，大凡先知，除了本地本家之外，没有不被人尊敬的。在马可的福音记载中补充说，耶稣 "诧异他们不信" (马可福音 6:6)。令人伤心和讽刺的是，那些最有机会或理由相信耶稣的人却最不相信他。
马太补充说，耶稣因为他们不信，就在他们那里不多行异能了。貌似耶稣的一部分家人开始相信他。传统告诉我们，他的弟兄雅各是耶路撒冷教会的领袖长老，是新约雅各书的作者。另一位弟兄犹大写了犹大书。
