这一教导的对应记载是在路加福音19:10和路加福音15:4-7。
耶稣强调这小子里每一个对他个人而言都非常重要。人子来为要拯救失丧的人。
耶稣将人子用作指向自己的弥赛亚称呼。弥赛亚来为要拯救失丧的人，这就是每一个小子对神何等宝贵。当那个身材矮小的税吏撒该悔改，并归还通过多收应纳款项而诈骗所得的一切时，耶稣用了这个确切的表述：
“人子来，为要寻找、拯救失丧的人。”
(路加福音19:10)
耶稣可能在其它场合也使用过这一表述，但福音书并未记载。
耶稣对门徒说了这话之后，就用问答的方式讲了一个简单的比喻。他以一个反思性的问题作为比喻的开场。他问门徒，你们的意思如何？译为“意思”的希腊文词是“Dokeo”，意思是“设想”或“感觉”。耶稣想要门徒对他即将要分享之比喻的第一反应。
该比喻是：一个人若有一百只羊，一只走迷了路，他岂不撇下这九十九只，往山里去找那只迷路的羊吗？
耶稣描述了一个有一百只羊的牧人，可是有一只走迷了路，丢了。耶稣让门徒思考，牧人岂不撇下这九十九只在一个安全的地方，为要往山里去找那只迷路的羊吗？回答是，牧人当然会这样做。
耶稣继续，若是找着了，我实在告诉你们，他为这一只羊欢喜，比为那没有迷路的九十九只欢喜还大呢！这人会因复得所迷失的而非常开心，会因找到这一只羊而庆祝。
作为人子，耶稣是我们的好牧人。耶稣的这一形象可以通过诗篇23篇和约翰福音10:14看到。他来也是为要拯救失丧的人。他不只是寻找，而且要为他的羊舍命(约翰福音10:15)。
在不同的上下文中，路加记载耶稣分享了这一比喻的另一个版本，被称为“迷羊的比喻”(路加福音15:4-7)。它与其它两个比喻并列：“失钱的比喻”(路加福音15:8-10)和“浪子的比喻”(路加福音15:11-32)。
耶稣总结了这一比喻的重点：你们在天上的父也是这样，不愿意这小子里失丧一个。神愿人人都得救(彼得后书3:9)。神深切地关心这小子们。对门徒和我们的暗示是：如果我们愿意在神的国里为大，我们当中的每一个人也都要关心这些小子们。
