这一教导的对应记载是在路加福音17:4。
那时，彼得开口，请耶稣回到怜悯的话题上来。
先前，在马太福音17:25-18:35的一段或一系列对话中，耶稣分享了迷羊的比喻(马太福音18:12-14)。这个比喻的主要观点之一是神爱祂的儿女，且愿意伴随他们，即使在他们走迷之时仍是如此。耶稣在比喻的开场告诉门徒，他来是要寻找并拯救失丧的人(马太福音18:13)。耶稣继续这一比喻，指示门徒如何试图挽回陷在罪里的弟兄。
彼得问耶稣，主啊，我弟兄得罪我，我当饶恕他几次呢？他是在问耶稣，他应当如何给怜悯设限。彼得提出了他所认为很好的答案，“到七次可以吗？”他的建议可能表明，彼得开始领会耶稣在登山包训中所教导门徒的怜恤原则(马太福音5:7；5:41；5:44；6:12；6:14-15；7:1-2)。
耶稣教导的怜恤原则是，我们给予他人的怜悯与我们从神领受的怜悯是一样的。彼得似乎部分地认识到这一原则，问他是否要饶恕冒犯或得罪他的弟兄到七次为止。或者，彼得可能是在回想和应用耶稣在其它地方所说有关饶恕的教导。
“你们要谨慎！若是你的弟兄得罪你，就劝戒他；他若懊悔，就饶恕他。倘若他一天七次得罪你，又七次回转，说：‘我懊悔了，你总要饶恕他。’”
(路加福音17:3-4)
七次对彼得来说似乎相当慷慨了，但彼得是在怜悯和饶恕上设限，而耶稣教导的是无限制的饶恕。
耶稣对彼得的回应具有修辞性且令人难忘，告诉他七次远远不够。耶稣说:“ 我对你说，不是到七次，乃是到七十个七次。”耶稣不是在教导彼得要将他的怜悯上限设为四百九十次，而是在教导彼得不要在怜悯上设限。换言之，只要你的弟兄需要饶恕，就要饶恕得罪你的弟兄。不是只饶恕你的弟兄七次，而是要向弟兄显出无限的怜悯和饶恕。
在接下来的经文中，耶稣教导彼得一个比喻来说明这一点。
