这一事件在福音书中没有明显的对应记载。
博士们去后，神差派一位主的使者向约瑟梦中显现。主的使者命令约瑟起来！叫醒小孩子同他母亲，并立即带着他们逃往埃及。主的使者向约瑟解释为什么他需要立刻行动，逃离伯利恒：希律必寻找小孩子，要除灭他。
约瑟被告知，不仅要离开犹太周围地区，还要一直前往埃及，远离希律的管辖范围。现代埃及的边境距离伯利恒大约 400 英里，所以在以步行和骑牲口为主要交通工具的时代而言，是一段相当长的旅程。这趟旅程很可能需要一个月或更久的时间。但约瑟立刻顺服了神的警告，就起来，夜间带着小孩子和他母亲，起行前往埃及去了。他甚至都没有等到天亮，立刻启程。神似乎通过博士们的礼物，为他们的长途跋涉提供了经费。在博士们去后，当晚约瑟就立刻出发，前往埃及。我们并没有被告知马利亚半夜被叫醒时听到解释时的反应 (所得到的解释是 "我们要去埃及，因为我做了一个梦，而且我们需要立刻离开")；可我们知道，马利亚是在夜间和约瑟一起离开的。
