这一事件在福音书中没有明显的对应记载。
希律见自己被博士愚弄，发现他们并未告诉他小弥赛亚的下落，就极其愤怒。这位因亲生儿子威胁到自己的权力而将他们杀死的暴君就大大发怒。希律无法容忍这样一个孩子的存在。为了平息他的怒气，确保自己的统治，希律派出屠夫将伯利恒城里并四境所有的男孩，凡两岁以里的，都杀尽了。希律这一指示的逻辑推断是在询问时，照着他向博士仔细查问的时候，基于他们第一次看到他的星，即弥赛亚降生之星的时候 (马太福音 2:2)。似乎耶稣是在大约一岁到两岁之间前往埃及，然后在五到六岁时返回以色列。
在马太福音之外，没有关于这场屠杀的直接记载，这并不奇怪。伯利恒是一个相对比较小的村庄，而且在希律执政期间，杀害小孩可能并非一件不寻常事件。基于伯利恒的人口，学者们预估受害者的人数是在六至二十四之间。结合希律如此无情的事实，他知道吹嘘此类命令并没有什么政治上的利益可言，最好还是保持低调，而且他也这样尝试了 (但当然这一意图被神阻止了)。
将这一恶行从大众视线中抹去并不能安慰那些被屠杀之孩子们的母亲和家人。悲痛太过真实，没有什么能使这些被残忍夺走的无辜生命起死回生。他们有机会讲述自己的故事，而且马太也为所有的后人将其记录了下来。
