这一事件在福音书中没有明显的对应记载。
马太说，这一悲惨事件 (通常被称为 "希律杀害无辜") 以及随后的哀悼应验了耶利米在耶利米书 31:15 的预言 (这是马太所引用耶稣是弥赛亚之先知预言的第四个直接应验)。马太直接引用了先知：

在此，拉结代表被杀害孩童的母亲；拉结也是约瑟的母亲，而约瑟是基督在旧约的一个预表。约瑟也下到了埃及，也在世界性饥荒期间，通过提供食物，拯救了以色列。约瑟的家人认为他死了很长时间，之后他又意外地突然出现在他们面前，拯救他们脱离饥荒。他甚至可能向他们展示了他的伤疤、他的割礼，来证明他的身份，类似于所预言耶稣再临地上时的以色列：

马太将要呈现耶稣为预言性的第二个摩西，应验了申命记 18:15 的预言。他不仅要带领他的百姓脱离罪的奴役，也要从山上传递一套活的律法，通告一个新约，是写在我们心上的。当马太描述耶稣小时候所面临恶王的可怕危险时，这与摩西的经历相似，他在篮子中漂浮，以避免类似的王室死刑判决。
希律搜寻和消灭伯利恒男婴的任务与出埃及记 1 章和 2 章摩西出生时，法老对希伯来男婴的屠杀相似。与立法者摩西一样，耶稣也幸免于暴君的愤怒。
