一切准备工作都已完成。各支派已通过人口普查统计并组织起来（第 1 至 4 章）。会幕的维护工作已详细说明，在迦南地要遵守的仪式也已描述（第 5 至 9 章）。因此，到了第二年，二月二十日，云彩从法柜的帐幕上收了起来（第 11 节）。据此，以色列人离开西奈是在离开埃及十四个月后，到达西奈山将近一年后。
如民数记 9:17 所述，当云彩从帐幕收上去时，以色列人就从西奈的旷野出发，启程（第 12 节）。启程一词在希伯来文中的字面意思是“启程”。耶和华的云彩移动，带动耶和华的子民移动。
