在离开西奈之前，摩西对米甸人流珥的儿子何巴说，流珥是摩西的岳父（第 29 节）。关于何巴的身份存在争议。这里，何巴被称为米甸人流珥的儿子，流珥是摩西的岳父。这样，何巴就是摩西的姐夫了。但在士师记 4:11 中，一个名叫何巴的人被称为摩西的“岳父”。因为希伯来语中“岳父”一词（“hoten”）可以指任何类型的姻亲关系，所以最好将何巴视为摩西的姐夫。

其次，摩西告诉他，如果你和我们一起去，主赐给我们什么好处，我们也会赐给你什么好处（第 32 节）。摩西告诉何巴，如果他和以色列人一起来到应许之地，他就会得到和以色列人一样的祝福。所以，何巴不仅在帮助以色列，也在帮助自己，因为他将分享以色列的祝福。
