关于利未人角色的另一个方面，主对摩西说话。在这里，他告诉摩西，他已从以色列人中选出利未人，代替所有的长子。由于第十灾（长子的死亡，出埃及记 13:15），耶和华将以色列的长子作为他的产业（出埃及记 13:2）。现在，他想让利未人成为他的产业，“代替所有的长子”，即以色列人中第一个子宫出生的孩子。因此，主宣布利未人将属于我。上帝在以色列各支派中选出所有的利未人，代替每个家族的长子。这样，他们也发挥了祭司的作用，代替其他人在耶和华面前献祭。
