耶和华又在西奈的旷野对摩西说话。他告诉摩西要按利未人的宗族、家谱数点他们，数点一个月以上的男丁。这与他数点其他支派男丁的方式不同。摩西数点利未人的男丁“一个月以上”，而对其他支派，他数点的是“二十岁以上”（民数记 1:20）。不同之处在于，其他支派的男丁仅限于二十岁以上，因为只有二十岁以上的人才有资格参军。在这里，利未人的人数是根据一个月以上男丁的总数来计算的。于是，摩西顺服耶和华的话，按照耶和华的吩咐数点他们。
利未人是利未儿子的后代，他们的名字是革顺、哥辖和米拉利（创世记 46:11；出埃及记 6:16）。因此，利未支派内的分支是按照利未的三个儿子来安排和组织的，并相应地进行编号。然后，摩西列出了每个利未儿子的后代的名字。首先，他按家族列出了利未长子革顺的儿子的名字（第 18 节），他们是立尼和示每（出埃及记 6:17）。接下来，按家族列出利未次子哥辖的儿子的名字，他们是暗兰、以斯哈、希伯伦和乌薛。暗兰是摩西、亚伦和他们的姐姐米利暗的父亲（出埃及记 6:20；民数记 26:59；历代志上 6:3）。然后，米拉利的儿子按着家族被数点，他们的名字是抹利和母示。
