箴言10:18中，所罗门说： “隐藏仇恨的，嘴唇说谎；散布谣言的，是愚昧人。”（第18节）这节经文谈到了两种截然相反却又相互关联的言语之罪：隐藏的仇恨和公开的诽谤。两者都源于一颗与爱和真理背道而驰的心。

散播诽谤之人，其行径恰恰相反，他以恶言恶语散播仇恨。所罗门称他为愚人，因为他用言语伤人而非疗愈。无论仇恨是隐晦的还是公开的，其根源都是一样的。智慧呼唤以正直之心说出真理，而非以礼貌掩饰苦毒，或以指责的方式释放怨恨。
