诗篇84:8-12： “万军之耶和华啊，求你垂听我的祷告；雅各的神啊，求你侧耳而听！”（细拉，第8节）直接呼求统领天军的神，信靠祂至高无上的能力，相信祂必垂听并回应。称祂为雅各的神，强调了主对先祖雅各的信实，雅各生活在公元前二千纪初。诗人通过提及雅各的名字，将主如今的大能与祂在历史长河中始终如一的应许联系起来。接着，他宣告： “神啊，求你垂顾我们的盾牌，眷顾你所膏立的人。” （第9节）承认神是祂子民的最终保护者——如同盾牌抵挡伤害——并承认那些蒙主膏立的人是蒙受神恩的。
