与之竞争的犹太 "权威" 对属灵权威的主张，很大一部分是对犹太 "权威" 的诉求。这很有影响力，因为当时的基督教只是犹太教的一个分支。基督教不再是犹太教分支的概念，对当时的信徒而言，似乎有点奇怪。尤其是保罗，他一生都保持着他的犹太身份。例如，当保罗最后到达罗马后，他见了 "犹太人的领袖们"，并告诉他们，"我没有做什么事干犯本国的百姓" (使徒行传 28:17)。
藉着呼应该书信的主题，即义人因信得生，保罗揭露了他们成为权威的犹太基础，并宣称，由于他们违背了律法，那么实际上他们并不比未受割礼的外邦人好。
保罗继续他的论点，破坏那些诽谤他信息的犹太人所主张的权威 (罗马书 3:8)。保罗指出，遵行律法的未受割礼之人 (换言之，就是外邦人) 实际上就是义人，虽然这人并未经历过犹太的圣礼割礼。神视他为受割礼的，是因为他做了割礼所提醒犹太人去做的事情：藉着遵行神的道 (包括神的律法)，遵守与神的盟约。
