如果说保罗有什么特点的话，那就是他很执着。在此，他再一次把已经说过许多次的论点说了一遍 (而且会继续说)：我们若遵行律法，就没有在神面前称义的可能性了。
没有。零可能。为什么？因为我们不能遵行律法。我们每个人都伏在罪恶之下 (23 节)。保罗把自己也看为罪人，说他并不比那些伪善的毁谤者强 (9 节)。
此外，在我们被称义的事上，没有可夸的，因为耶稣是唯一的称义者 (26-27 节)。耶稣所行的在神面前称义的行动完全在律法之外 (21 节)，也是完全免费赐予的，没有任何附加条件。只有凭信，才能接受这份礼物 (24-25 节)。
与之竞争的犹太 "权威" 坚持遵行律法是在神面前称义的必要条件，并毁谤保罗所坚持的 "在神面前称义是本乎恩、因着信，是在律法之外" 的观点。保罗在此不断地、巧妙地解构毁谤；如果它被世界知名的罗马信徒接受的话，就会破坏保罗的福音信息。
