在进一步论证信是通往义的道路，而非律法的过程中，保罗在此澄清了一些事情；亚伯拉罕的后裔是那些因信称义，而非因律法称义的人。
相信耶稣可以让我们接受神眼中的义，这是基于神的工作和决定，而且只有神。从我们起初相信基督之时，我们就无条件地属于神和神的家。因此，保罗将继续解释，我们相信耶稣福音的人是与亚伯拉罕同为后嗣 (24 节)，因为神算亚伯拉罕的信为义 (3 节)。
如果是因律法，我们才与亚伯拉罕同为后嗣-如果我们必须受割礼，等-那就说不通了，因为算数的是亚伯拉罕的信，而非他的行为。保罗认为，如果遵行律法是称义和承受神应许的必要条件，那么亚伯拉罕的应许就不再有效。这就意味着，神已经藉着引入律法，而推翻了祂的应许。

耶稣来是要带来律法以外的义 (罗马书 3:21)，是亚伯拉罕相信律法以外的应许，以致神称亚伯拉罕为义的延续。保罗继续这一思想，在神因信称亚伯拉罕为义之后，将律法添加为称义的要求，这必然会增加亚伯拉罕的怒气，使神所做的应许无效。而且，因神称我们为义是在律法之外，所以我们违背律法并不会带来与神隔绝的惩罚；神的恩典跨越了我们和神之间的鸿沟。因为律法已经为我们废除了，所以就 "没有了过犯"。
