罪是从一人入了世界，死又是从罪来的。在亚当犯罪之后 (创世记 3 章)，死就临到众人。在圣经中 "死亡" 通常指隔绝。在英文中，死亡一词也是如此。当我们说一种关系已死，意思是曾经有关系的人现在分开了，我们众人都犯了罪。
属灵的死亡是亚当堕落的结果。与亚当和夏娃一起，我们人类都在属灵上与神隔绝，无法通过我们自己的力量治愈这种隔绝。保罗称这为 "死在罪和过犯中" (以弗所书 2:1)。正如亚伯拉罕、保罗和罗马信徒一样，是亚当和夏娃对神应许的相信赐给了他们属灵的生命，在创世记 3:15 亚当和夏娃的例子中，神应许了拯救者。

保罗说没有律法之先，罪已经在世上；但没有律法，罪也不算罪。即便如此，正如下一节经文所说，直至摩西之时，死亡已经在世上了。这里似乎有一个应用：即使人们活在无知之中，罪的后果仍然成立有效。
