罪带来死亡，正如神告诉亚当的那样。死亡是隔绝，而且世上充满了许多分歧，但这世界本来应当是和谐的。当神创造因果关系时，它是可靠的。虽然亚当堕落后，没有摩西律法，但罪依然在世上，因此也就有了死亡。从亚当到摩西，死就作了王。死亡是我们从亚当继承的刑罚，蔓延至全人类。
在整个时期，死亡都在作王，连那些不与亚当犯一样罪过的，也在他的权下。换言之，虽然亚当所有子孙的罪都与亚当的罪不同，但死亡依然作王。亚当有能力不犯罪，但他堕落了。亚当乃是那以后要来之人的预像，是第二个亚当，也就是耶稣。耶稣，由童贞女所生，并没有继承亚当堕落的本性。虽然耶稣也像我们一样，在各样事上受试探，但他没有犯罪 (希伯来书 4:15)。第一个亚当有能力不犯罪，但他犯罪时，就堕落了。保罗将显明另一个原因来表明他的福音优越于与之竞争的犹太 "权威" 的福音，其中他解释了在耶稣之前所有人的遭遇。
