神选择怜悯谁就怜悯谁，选择向谁施恩就向谁施恩，而且祂选择反对谁就反对谁。在法老的例子中，法老已经反对神了，并且拒绝神向他交流的所有方式，无论是摩西和亚伦直接告诉法老神的命令，或者是神派下的导致法老国度混乱的许多瘟疫。神知道法老每一次都会违抗祂，这就是为什么神一开始会允许他成为法老的原因。祂使用一个有能力、悖逆的统治者来彰显祂，神，是非常有能力的，全地都当看到这一点。神告诉摩西对法老说，"我将你兴起来，特要在你身上彰显我的权能，并要使我的名传遍天下。"

令人鼓舞的是，罗马书非常清楚地说明了神对那些相信祂之人的目的。任何藉着信接受神白白所赐恩典的人都要被接纳进入神的家，成为祂的儿女。神要怜悯谁就怜悯谁，要叫谁刚硬就叫谁刚硬。但当提到藉着耶稣的宝血在祂面前称义的时候，显然神将这恩典白白地赐给了全人类。正如这段经文所示，我们信靠谁的选择会产生巨大的结果。
法老依靠自己，在神使他的心更刚硬之前，他自己的心已经刚硬了。当保罗在罗马书讨论神的忿怒时，他明确指出，当人们坚持自己的内心时，神最终会 "任凭他们" 直到他们有邪僻的心。任何选择自己方式的人都会经历负面的后果。
