现在路得完美地执行着这个计划。她就下到场上，照她婆婆所吩咐她的而行。随着计划的开展，路得观察了什么时候波阿斯吃喝完了，心里欢畅。然后在他去睡在麦堆旁边后，路得就按拿俄米所指示的采取了行动。路得悄悄地来掀开他脚上的被，躺卧在那里。路得安静地躺在波阿斯的脚边，并未让他发觉。
显然，当路得躺卧时，波阿斯已经睡得很熟了。直到夜半波阿斯才发现路得。路得可能已经在那里躺了好几个小时。猜测"她在等待时可能会想什么，好奇将会发生什么"是很有趣的。我们确实知道，她一直待在那里直到被发现。
当波阿斯醒来，发现有人在那里时，就作出了反应。我们被告知，"那人忽然惊醒，翻过身来，不料有女子躺在他的脚下。" 当半夜有人躺在你脚边，被吓醒的情况下，波阿斯问了一个可能最为合理的问题："你是谁？"路得回答说："我是你的婢女路得。求你用你的衣襟遮盖我，因为你是我一个至近的亲属。"
"衣襟"一词最常被译为"翅膀"，正如路得记2:12里所说的：
"愿耶和华照你所行的赏赐你。你来投靠耶和华─以色列神的翅膀下，愿你满得他的赏赐。"
路得请求得到波阿斯的保护。波阿斯已经赞扬路得在以色列神的翅膀下寻求保护的举动，现在路得也请求来到波阿斯的保护性翅膀下。她的解释"因为你是我一个至近的亲属"明确表明她正在请求他，按照亲属救赎者的传统娶自己为妻。
