在现代社会中，房地产交易由公证员来作证，契约在县法院备案。我们依赖来自当事人和见证人（公证员）的签字。但是在纸张出现之前，人们使用不同的习俗。要定夺甚么事，或赎回，或交易，这人就脱鞋给那人。这是创建合法转让的古老方式，由十位见证人提供证据。从这样的措辞来看，很可能在这个故事被记录成文字的时候，这个习俗已经发生了改变。
所以依照这个习俗，至近亲属对波阿斯说，"你自己买吧！"于是将鞋脱下来了。波阿斯对长老和众民说："你们今日作见证，凡属以利米勒和基连、玛伦的，我都从拿俄米手中置买了"， 以利米勒是拿俄米死去的丈夫。但是除了购买土地外，波阿斯还宣布，他娶了玛伦（拿俄米的儿子）的妻摩押女子路得为自己的妻子。
波阿斯在他的陈述里列入了娶路得为妻的理由。他特别承诺好在死人的产业上存留他的名。波阿斯在用自己的资源建立家族的另外一个分支。见证人同意并祝福这个交易。他们希望波阿斯和路得的联结使后代兴旺，像他们的先祖雅各一样，雅各后被更名为以色列。他们也祷告他们的后代将得亨通，在伯利恒得名声。这个祷告得到了应允，因为这个后代成就了大卫王的诞生。
接着他们诉诸于她玛的故事。当弟兄都拒绝履行他们的义务为她玛留后时，她玛伪装成妓女，引诱犹大与她同寝。在那个不体面的约会中，她玛从犹大所生法勒斯。那是波阿斯的先祖。在马太福音1章里，耶稣家谱中提及了四位妇人，她玛和路得是其中的两位。她们有着共同点，即都是亲属救赎者习俗的受益人。耶稣是我们的亲属救赎者/救主，对信徒来说这就像一幅图景。耶稣救赎那些相信他的人，并赐给我们产业。
