In 1 Samuel 2:21 we immediately see the fulfillment of the blessing that Hannah and Elkanah received from Eli: The LORD visited Hannah; and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew before the LORD (v. 21). Hannah’s prayers for children are answered in a way far greater than she had asked, validating her trust and devotion. God not only granted her the initial child, Samuel, but also graciously blessed her with a larger family. Hannah’s gratitude to God had already been expressed earlier in the chapter, reflecting her faithful heart and her willingness to dedicate her first son to the LORD’s service. Historically, Hannah’s lived around the 11th century BC, during the period of the judges, just before the monarchy would be established in Israel.
The mention of Samuel’s growth in the verse is significant: the boy Samuel grew before the LORD (v. 21). This statement foreshadows his lifelong calling as a prophet and judge for Israel. He would serve as a pivotal figure in the history of God’s people—transitioning them from the era of the judges to the leadership of kings like Saul and David. Samuel would be among the most influential prophets, used by God to both counsel Israel’s rulers and lead the nation in righteousness (1 Samuel 3:19). In dedicating Samuel at the Tabernacle in Shiloh, Hannah set in motion a life wholly devoted to the LORD’s purposes.
God’s abundant blessing to Hannah beyond her first child also illustrates His ability to exceed expectations in response to faithful prayers (Ephesians 3:20). While verses prior show Hannah’s deep anguish and longing, this verse reveals that God’s provision can come in a more extensive form than initially requested. The outcome not only brought joy to Hannah’s life but also continued to shape the spiritual direction of Israel through Samuel’s devoted service. By including the detail of three sons and two daughters (v. 21), the verse shows the generous and caring nature of God toward those who humble themselves before Him.
