The Bible Says
Proverbs 10:15 Meaning

In Proverbs 10:15, Solomon writes, The rich man’s wealth is his fortress, the ruin of the poor is their poverty (v. 15). This proverb recognizes a practical reality of life in a fallen world: resources can provide protection, while the lack of it can expose a person to hardship. Solomon is describing the way things often function under ordinary conditions.

Wealth can act like a fortress because it gives a person options, shelter, and a buffer against crisis. Proverbs does not deny the practical usefulness of money. At the same time, it never teaches that wealth is the ultimate source of security. Wealth is a limited fortress, not an absolute one.

The poor are described as vulnerable to ruin, which highlights how harsh poverty can be. Lack can compound difficulty and make a person fragile in many ways. Yet elsewhere Scripture reminds us that ultimate refuge is not found in riches but in God, who is the true stronghold of His people (Psalm 18:2).
