The Bible Says
Proverbs 10:16 Meaning

In Proverbs 10:16, Solomon says, The wages of the righteous is life, the income of the wicked, punishment (v. 16). This verse presents a harvest principle. Every path produces a return, and the outcome matches the nature of the road being traveled.

The wages of the righteous is life because righteousness leads toward wholeness, peace, and flourishing. That life shows up in relationships, conscience, stability, and fellowship with God. It is the fitting fruit of walking according to wisdom.

But the income of the wicked is punishment. Even where wickedness appears to prosper, it carries judgment in itself because it is working against reality. Romans 6:23 later echoes this truth by teaching that the wages of sin is death. Solomon is showing that moral choices are not empty—they bear fruit according to their kind.
