In Proverbs 10:17, Solomon writes, He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, but he who ignores reproof goes astray (v. 17). The image of a path is central to Proverbs. Life is not static; it is directional. We are always walking somewhere through our choices.
To heed instruction means more than hearing words. It means receiving correction, allowing it to shape conduct, and submitting to truth. That posture keeps a person on the path of life because it allows wisdom to redirect him before folly hardens into destruction.
The person who ignores reproof goes astray because he cuts himself off from one of God’s great means of guidance. Reproof is a grace, not an insult. When received humbly, it becomes protection. When rejected, it often becomes the first step into deeper wandering.
