The Bible Says
Proverbs 10:4 Meaning

In Proverbs 10:4, Solomon writes, Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the hand of the diligent makes rich (v. 4). This proverb speaks to the ordinary pattern God has built into life: laziness tends toward lack, while diligence often leads toward fruitfulness. Solomon is describing a principle of stewardship, not offering a simplistic formula for all circumstances.

A negligent hand pictures carelessness, inconsistency, and half-hearted effort. It is the posture of someone who has responsibility but does not take it seriously. Proverbs repeatedly warns that laziness wastes opportunity and slowly erodes a person’s ability to flourish. Even small neglects, repeated over time, can produce significant loss.

By contrast, the hand of the diligent makes rich. Diligence is faithful, attentive labor that honors the opportunities God gives. Richness here includes material fruit, but also the broader abundance of trustworthiness, competence, and stability. In this sense, diligence reflects the character of God, who is orderly and purposeful in all His works, and it also fits Paul’s later exhortation to labor heartily as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
