The Bible Says
Proverbs 10:5 Meaning

In Proverbs 10:5, Solomon says, He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully (v. 5). This proverb focuses on timing. Wisdom does not merely know what is right; it knows when to act. The wise recognize seasons and respond appropriately.

To gather in summer means to take advantage of the season of opportunity. Harvest does not wait forever, and wisdom understands that some responsibilities are urgent. A wise son is one who sees the moment before him and acts faithfully within it, rather than delaying until the opportunity has passed.

By contrast, he who sleeps in harvest is not resting in a healthy sense, but failing to act at the time action is required. That is why Solomon calls him shameful. He has not merely made a mistake; he has wasted entrusted opportunity. This verse reminds us that stewardship includes readiness, and that missed seasons can bring loss that later regret cannot easily recover.
