In Proverbs 11:11, Solomon writes, By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down (v. 11). The upright contribute to communal flourishing through blessing, while the wicked damage a city through speech. Once more Solomon shows that words and character shape the world around us.
The blessing of the upright includes both what they say and how they live. Upright people bring stability, generosity, truth, and faithful action into public life. A city is exalted when its people are strengthened by righteousness rather than corroded by selfishness.
The wicked, however, tear it down by the mouth. Corrupt speech can unravel trust, justice, and shared mission. This aligns with a lesson taught later in the Book of Proverbs, where one who spreads strife among brothers is especially hated by the Lord (to learn more about how destructive speech opposes God’s design and disrupts unity among His people, please read our commentary on Proverbs 6:16-19). The health of a community depends greatly on the moral shape of its speech.
