The Bible Says
Proverbs 11:19 Meaning

In Proverbs 11:19, Solomon writes, He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, and he who pursues evil will bring about his own death (v. 19). Steadfastness matters because wisdom is a path, not a moment. Righteousness is not merely admired; it must be pursued consistently.

To be steadfast in righteousness is to keep choosing God’s way over time, especially when other options seem easier or more immediately rewarding. That path attain[s] to life because it is aligned with reality and with God’s design.

The one who pursues evil, however, is actively chasing death. Solomon does not speak as though evil were accidental. To pursue it is to walk willingly toward separation, ruin, and loss. Romans later gives the same principle in sharper theological form: the wages of sin is death (to learn more about how pursuing sin leads to death and reflects the true outcome of a life apart from righteousness, please read our commentary on Romans 6:21-23).
