In Proverbs 11:2, Solomon says, When pride comes, then comes dishonor, but with the humble is wisdom (v. 2). Pride is one of the great enemies in Proverbs because it begins with the assumption that we know best apart from God. That spirit always bends a person away from truth, and once truth is abandoned, dishonor soon follows.
Pride brings dishonor because it builds a life on illusion. The proud person wants elevation without submission, praise without service, and significance without trust in God. But a life built on self-exaltation cannot remain stable, because it is detached from reality. Proverbs repeatedly shows that God’s world resists pride because it resists Him
By contrast, with the humble is wisdom. Humility is not self-hatred; it is seeing reality as it is. It acknowledges need, receives instruction, and trusts God. That is why humility and wisdom belong together. James 4:6 repeats this principle when it says God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble.
