In Proverbs 11:3, Solomon writes, The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them (v. 3). Integrity functions like an internal compass. It keeps a person moving in a straight direction because it binds the heart to truth.
The upright are guided by integrity because they are not constantly adjusting a false image, since their character provides direction. They do not need endless schemes to protect themselves, because they are living openly before God. Integrity does not remove every difficulty, but it does create clarity.
The crookedness of the treacherous6, however, becomes self-destructive. Treachery always twists what should be straight, and over time that twisting becomes collapse. This verse shows again that sin contains its own ruin. What looks like cleverness in the short term turns out to be destruction in the end.
