In Proverbs 12:10, Solomon says, A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, but even the compassion of the wicked is cruel (v. 10). This proverb reveals how far righteousness extends. It shapes even the way a person treats animals under his care.
A righteous person has regard for the life of his animal, meaning he notices, cares, and acts responsibly toward weaker creatures entrusted to him. This reflects God’s own orderly and compassionate rule over creation. Stewardship is part of righteousness.
By contrast, even the compassion of the wicked is cruel. Their best-looking impulses are still bent by self-interest and distortion. Even when they appear tender, their approach is corrupted. Solomon’s point is striking: righteousness reaches down into small acts of care, while wickedness spoils even what seems merciful.
