The Bible Says
Proverbs 12:17 Meaning

In Proverbs 12:17, Solomon writes, He who speaks truth tells what is right, but a false witness, deceit (v. 17). This proverb is simple and direct: truth aligns with what is right, while falsehood distorts it. Speech reveals whether a person is participating in justice or corruption.

To speak truth is to bear witness faithfully to reality. This is especially important in settings where judgment, reputation, and relationships are at stake. Truthful speech upholds justice because it refuses to manipulate the facts for selfish ends.

A false witness, by contrast, tells deceit. They insert distortion into places where truth is needed most. That is why false witness is so serious in Scripture. It can turn the machinery of justice into an instrument of harm. The righteous love truth because truth protects what is right.
