The Bible Says
Proverbs 12:18 Meaning

In Proverbs 12:18, Solomon says, There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing (v. 18). Words can wound with shocking force. Solomon compares reckless speech to stabbing blows.

To speak rashly is to talk without care for timing, truth, or effect. Such speech cuts because it is thoughtless, harsh, or uncontrolled. A sword leaves damage behind it, and so do words spoken from anger, vanity, or impatience.

By contrast, the tongue of the wise brings healing. Wise speech does not merely avoid harm; it actively restores. It can comfort the wounded, correct the wandering, and mend what conflict has broken. Proverbs repeatedly teaches that wisdom is life-giving, and here that life appears in the redemptive power of words.
