In Proverbs 12:5, Solomon writes, The thoughts of the righteous are just, but the counsels of the wicked are deceitful (v. 5). Here the king moves beneath outward action and into the realm of thought and counsel. He shows that righteousness and wickedness differ at the level of intention and reasoning.
The thoughts of the righteous are just because a righteous person’s inner life is being shaped by truth. He considers matters with fairness, integrity, and concern for what is right before God. His mind is not merely clever; it is morally ordered.
The counsels of the wicked, however, are deceitful. Even their guidance is crooked because it is driven by manipulation, self-interest, and falsehood. This verse reminds us that wisdom is not only about what we do, but how we think. Jesus also emphasizes the inner dimension of righteousness, teaching that the heart is the source from which actions and words flow (to learn more about how Jesus teaches that the condition of the heart shapes words and actions, please read our commentary on Matthew 15:18-19).
