In Proverbs 12:6, Solomon says, The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright will deliver them (v. 6). Words are never neutral in Proverbs. Here speech is pictured either as a trap for violence or as a means of rescue.
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood because wicked speech is predatory. It may take the form of false accusation, slander, incitement, or manipulation, but its intent is to injure. The mouth becomes a weapon, prepared to bring harm to others.
By contrast, the mouth of the upright will deliver them. Upright speech can rescue because truth defends, exposes lies, and protects the innocent. This proverb highlights how powerfully God uses words either to destroy or to save. It also anticipates the New Testament theme that truthful speech is part of loving one’s neighbor and walking in righteousness.
