In Proverbs 13:20, Solomon says, He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm (v. 20). Companionship shapes character, we become like the company we keep because human beings are formed in community.
To walk with wise men is to share life with those whose perspective is shaped by truth and the fear of the Lord. Wisdom is often caught as much as taught. Nearness to the wise tends to make a person wiser because their way of seeing reality becomes contagious.
The companion of fools, however, will suffer harm. Foolish influence leads to damage because folly normalizes crookedness, laziness, pride, and self-deception. This proverb is a sober reminder that our relationships are not morally neutral; rather, they are part of our path.
